Description
Emmanuel Baptist Church, founded in 1736 and renovated in 1902, is built of ashlar and set well back from the street. It features a two-storey gable end with four first-floor windows framed by side piers, above which is a mitred cornice that forms the base of a modern pediment from 1902. There is a panelled string course below the cornice. The church has a projecting ground floor annexe with quadrant corners, a Doric portico in antis, and flanking windows. The windows are segmental-headed with raised surrounds, keys, imposts, and cill blocks, containing three-light round-headed lancets, along with a square window with similar lights inside the portico. There are three ranges of windows along the sides of the building. Inside, the church features a gallery on four sides with curved corners and turned balusters leading up a double flight to a raised lectern. At the north-west end, there is a gabled archway to the Sunday School designed by William Smith, which is included with this listing. The church is part of a group with Nos 2 to 7 (consecutive) and 9 to 12 (consecutive).
