Description

This is a late 18th- or early 19th-century terrace of properties, originally known as Southbroom Terrace, now numbered 89 to 97 Southbroom Road. The buildings are constructed of Bath stone, with a rusticated finish to the ground floor. They have three storeys and a basement, with continuous first and second-floor sill courses. A moulded cornice and blocking course run along the top of the facade, above a low-pitched gable end slate roof. Each house originally had two windows to the upper floors and a single window on the ground floor, featuring recessed sash windows, most of which retain their original glazing bars. Number 93 has false windows on each floor to the right-hand side. The ground floor windows have small, scrolled iron balconies. Number 91 has a mid-19th century canted bay window of Gothic character, with three lights, each featuring a four-centred arch, foliate capitals to the columns, and a parapet decorated with quatrefoil panels. Each house has a single basement window. The recessed doors are of six fielded panels, with reeded edges, moulded door heads, arched surrounds, and radiating wrought iron fanlights, the latter including a cast lead arrow ornament. The terrace is set slightly back from the street and stands on a stone plinth projecting level with the pavement. Steps cut through the plinth provide access to the doors, accompanied by iron railings with anthemion-shaped tops to the newels. This terrace forms a group with numbers 71 to 99 (odd), The Volunteers Arms, and numbers 103 to 113 (odd).
