Description
The stables and carriage house located on the northwest side of Stockton House date from the 17th century, with a carriage house addition made in 1834. The building features a combination of flint and limestone in a chequered pattern, topped with a tiled roof that has saddleback coped verges. It is a single-storey structure with lofts and has a symmetrical seven-bay front facing south. The central bay, which projects forward, contains an elliptical-arched carriage entrance with a moulded Tudor-arched loft opening above. The two bays on either side feature two mullioned windows with semi-circular headed leaded lights and square hoodmoulds. The side bays also project forward and have similar two-light mullioned windows at ground level and Tudor-arched loft openings above.
At the rear, there is a central gabled wing with a two-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement, while the rear wall is constructed in Flemish bond brick. The interior no longer has stalls or loose boxes, but retains semi-circular headed niches on the rear wall. Attached to the right are additional stables and the carriage house, which includes staff accommodation above. This section was designed by John Benett of Pyt House in 1834 and is built of limestone ashlar, featuring three elliptical-arched carriage doors and a segmental-arched throughway leading to a service court at the back of Stockton House. The first floor has four gabled dormers with two-light mullioned casements.
