Description
No 136 on High Street is a 16th-century building that has been altered. It is three stories tall, with a timber frame and tile hanging, featuring single gables at the front. The building is adorned with shaped tiles. On the second floor, there is a six-light lead casement window, although the lights have been modernized. The first floor has a half-octagon bay window, which is situated beneath a heavy moulded wood cornice that extends across the front and around the sides of the bay. The ground floor showcases a plain early 19th-century shop front, which includes two three-light shop windows with altered glazing flanking a central glazed door, all under a pent roof supported by Doric columns. At the back, there is a long two-story wing constructed of timber frame with color-washed brick infilling, featuring irregular casement windows and doors, including one window with a sill supported by a 16th-century cut bracket. This building is part of a group with Nos 131 to 144 and Midland Bank, alongside the Town Hall and Nos 1 to 12 opposite.
