Description

This building is a row of three cottages, now functioning as two dwellings, located at 28-30 Foghamshire in Chippenham. They date from the mid to late 18th century, with No. 30 restored in 1985 by the Chippenham Civic Society. The cottages are constructed from limestone rubble, featuring freestone quoins on Nos. 28 and 29, which is painted on the front. They have a double-Roman tile gambrel roof that sweeps at the eaves, with two raking dormers and a brick ridge stack on the party wall. No. 30 has a stone slate roof and a large 19th-century gabled dormer with a two-light casement window. Nos. 28 and 29 are single-storey with an attic, each cottage having a one-window range. They feature timber lintels over the openings and steps leading up to 20th-century six-panel doors on the left side of each cottage. Each has 19th-century casement windows with two panes per leaf. No. 30 has a single-storey, one-window front with an attic, steps leading up to a 20th-century six-panel door under a timber lintel, and a 19th-century plain freestone surround to a paired six-over-six pane sash window in the center. There is a two-storey rear wing with timber lintels over the openings. The interiors were not inspected. Nos. 28 and 29 represent an externally intact example of 18th-century artisan cottages, while No. 30 is included for group value.
