Description

Numbers 6-10 Weavers Cottages, also known as Factory Row, is a row of five houses built around 1815. They are constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and have a slate hipped roof with two ridge stacks and a west end stack. The houses are three storeys high, featuring flush quoins, a plinth, two raised string courses, and raised brick eaves. Each house has a single-room plan and a side entrance to the right of the window range, with doors set within flush beaded surrounds. The windows are two-light units with small panes in a fixed upper light and a lower opening sash; the window arrangement follows a pattern of “D”oor, “W”indow, “W”indow, “D”oor, “D”oor, “W”indow, “W”indow, “D”oor. Stone lintels are raised above the doorways of numbers 7, 8, and 9. Contemporary (20th century) doors are present throughout. Number 6 retains traces of a blocked window range above the door. Number 9 has a large 20th century window on the ground floor, and numbers 9 and 10 have some ground and first-floor windows replaced with small-paned units. In 1814, W. Gaisford leased land next to the chapel and rebuilt a row of cottages to create a spinning factory, which ceased operating in 1827. The factory was subsequently converted into houses, potentially as part of the original design intention.
