Description

Gables Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century, constructed of rubble stone with a stone-tiled roof at the front and a large chimney gable at the rear. The building is one storey with an attic and features three rebuilt dormer gables, each with large timber leaded casements. On the ground floor, there are four chamfered timber lintels from the 16th century, one above an 18th-century oak plank door, one over a blocked opening, one above a broken two-light stone mullion window that is unmoulded with leaded lights, and one over a three-light timber leaded casement.

The interior suggests that the house originally had an open hall with two-storey ends, although the center may have been floored at one time. The left end is accessed through a passage, and the central room contains a rear wall fireplace and a pyramid-stopped chamfered axial beam. On the left side wall, there is a bracket carved with the initials I M and the date 1712. A staircase in the angle to the right of the fireplace partially blocks a timber Tudor arched opening, which has a blocked square head opening next to it, possibly part of a screen. The room at the north end features a 16th-century coved stone shelf above an inserted small fireplace from the early 18th century on the south wall. The upper floor has a central collar truss, and the north end room includes windbraces on the rear roof slope.
