CASTLE COMBE THE STREET ST 8477 (west side) 6/165 Gables Cottage (formerly listed as House 7 yds 20.12.60 north of Unicorn Cottage)

House, C16, rubble stone with stone tiled roof to front and large rear wall chimney gable. One storey and attic. 3 rebuilt dormer gables with large timber leaded casements. Ground floor, 4 chamfered C16 timber lintels, one over C18 oak plank door, one over blocked opening, one broken for 2-light stone mullion window, unmoulded with leaded lights and one over 3-light timber leaded casement. Interior suggests former open hall with 2-storey ends, but centre possibly floored originally. Left end through passage, centre room with rear wall fireplace and pyramid-stopped chamfered axial beam. On left side wall a bracket carved I M 1712. Stair in angle to right of fireplace part blocking timber Tudor arched opening with blocked square head opening adjoining, possibly part of a screen. North end room has C16 coved stone shelf over inserted early C18 small fireplace on south wall. Upper floor has central collar truss and north end room has windbraces to rear roof slope.
