Description
The Old Rectory is a 17th-century house located on the east side of The Street, Castle Combe. It is constructed of rubble stone with a stone tile roof, featuring a coped north gable with a finial. The roof also includes a rebuilt ridge stack and a south end stack.
The building's front elevation, viewed from the left, presents a two-light window with a cyma-moulded flush mullion to the ground floor, above which is a dormer gable with a dripstone. Further along, there's a low-eaves casement window, followed by a 19th-century door with a timber lintel and a pedimental dripstone. To the right, an altered ovolo-moulded single light window with a hood is visible, alongside a casement pair above. At the extreme right end is a former three-light recessed chamfered mullion window, where the mullions have been removed and replaced with a timber paired window. A recessed ovolo-moulded window with a hoodmould is set within a dormer gable above that. A single light window is present in the north end wall. The rear includes a lean-to addition with a 16th-century Tudor arched doorway, featuring flanking shields and a studded plank door in the north end wall.
Attached to the south is a single-storey stone-tiled range, originally known as Old Rectory Cottage (as indicated on Ordnance Survey maps). This range has a door at its left end and three large windows with timber lintels. Lead lights are present throughout the house. Inside, the south end of the main range features a large fireplace with a timber lintel.
