Description

The Summer House at Milford Manor is a Grade II* listed building from the early 18th century, believed to have been used as a workroom by the author Henry Fielding. It is constructed of red brick with flush ashlar quoins and features a coved plaster cornice. The building has a conical roof covered with old tiles, topped with a wooden ball finial and a wrought iron weather vane. It has a square plan and includes one window each on the east, west, and south elevations. These windows are flush double-hung sashes with plain aprons, moulded stone cills, cambered relieving arches, and keystones.

Access to the building is via four stone steps with wrought iron railings leading up to a doorway. The door is two-thirds glazed with glazing bars and has two panels below. Above the door, there is a raised panel beneath a cambered relieving arch and keystone.

Inside, the Summer House features a fielded panelled corner cupboard and reveals around the windows and door. The wall panels are adorned with egg and dart ovolo borders, and there are raised double swags in the panels over the windows. The coved cornice is decorated with an anthemion design, and the panelled saucer dome includes swags in the outer panels, a large central rose, and eight smaller roses around the circumference of the central panel, with foliage in the spandrels. Above the door, two swags flank a cartouche featuring the shield of the Swayne family. The building is listed for its combined architectural and historical interest.
