Description
No. 65, along with No. 63, known as The Wheelwrights House, are two semi-detached houses located on the north side of Chapmanslade High Street. They date from the early to late 18th century and are constructed of English bond brick, featuring chamfered stone quoins and a stone plinth, topped with a tiled roof and gable end brick stacks.
The buildings are two stories tall and have a total of six windows. Each house has a door with six fielded panels set in a chamfered stone case, topped with a flat stone hood supported by brackets. To the left and right of the door to No. 63, there are two 12-pane sash windows in beaded architraves, with a 20th-century window in the cellar to the right. The first floor features five 12-pane sash windows in beaded architraves to the right, and to the left of the straight joint with quoins, there is a three-light cyma-mullioned casement above the door to No. 65.
The attic includes three gabled dormers, each with 6-pane windows. The left return of the building has two three-light cyma-mullioned casements on the ground floor, a two-light casement with a sash to one light on the first floor, and a two-light casement in the attic dormer of the rear wing. There is a rear parallel range, and 20th-century garages attached to the rear that are not of special interest.
The front is flanked by rendered walls with weathered stone coping and brick gate piers topped with moulded stone cappings and tall finials. Notably, No. 63 was formerly known as the Wheelwrights Arms Inn.
