Description
Crofton Crossing Lock No 61 and the accommodation bridge are located on the Kennet and Avon Canal and were built between 1799 and 1810, designed by Chief Engineer John Rennie. The lock is constructed from brick with stone copings and features timber gates. The upper gates include ground paddles and an inset ladder, while the lower gates are equipped with gear for gate paddles. Both sets of gates were restored in 1975. Below the lower gate is an accommodation bridge, which has a bullnosed 330 mm brick ring that integrates into the lock wall. The bridge has a two-course string and parapet with a flush round brick coping, and it is splayed in plan. This site is part of an important group of industrial and utilitarian monuments that hold special interest.
