Description

This is an unidentified chest tomb located approximately 4 meters west of the Chafyn Grove memorial in the churchyard of the Church of St Michael. It dates from around 1700 and is made of limestone. The tomb features a deep flat ledger stone with a cavetto mould surrounding a plain chest. The south side of the tomb has a panel with a moulded top edge that carries a bold inscription in lower case, which is partially legible. The inscription reads:

"Thinke on mee as you pass by As you are now so once was I But now I lye d....h.d to dust hoping to rise among the just."

These sentiments have appeared on monuments in various forms since the early 12th century.
