Description

ST 8032-8132 MERE CHURCH STREET (south side) 6/42 Unidentified monument c.4 m west of Chafyn-Grove memorial in the churchyard of the Church of St Michael

GV II

Chest tomb. 1700. Limestone. Chest tomb with deep flat ledger stone to cavetto mould to plain chest, but south side has panel with moulded top edge carrying a bold inscription in lower case, partly legible, thus:

'Thinke on mee as you pass by As you are now so once was I But now I lye d....h.d to dust hoping to rise among the just'

These are sentiments expressed in varying ways on monuments since the early C12.
