Description

6 West Street is a mid-to-late 18th century building, with some remnants of a 16th-century interior. It is two storeys high, constructed of red brick with a half-hipped tiled roof. A coved and moulded wooden eaves cornice runs along the top. The north-west gable end, where a dormered chimney was once located, now shows exposed roofing felt. Five cross-glazed sash windows are present on the first floor, each with a brick flat arch and a stone key. The building originally featured a shop front and doorcase from the early 19th century, which have since been removed. The ground floor has been altered to include two plate-glass recessed shop fronts with large, single fascias, covering the original plat band. Inside the left-hand shop, a good moulded cross beam ceiling from the late 16th century remains, featuring broken gilded stucco acanthus leaf pendants at the corners, possibly reassembled. A blocked, high-arched Tudor fireplace is visible on the right-hand wall.
