Description
The Green Vine and Dairy Cottage is a row of three cottages located in Fittleton, dating from around 1500, 1580-1620, the early to mid-18th century, and the 19th century. The cottages feature timber framing and brick laced flintwork, topped with a thatched roof. They are primarily single storey with an attic, but the northern end rises to two storeys.
The central section consists of two bays, framed but completely covered with nailed framing at the front. To the right is a single bay from the mid-18th century made of laced flint, which includes an early door and frame opposite the stack, featuring a gauged 270mm lintel and a simple canopy. There are sixteen-pane sash windows in an earlier opening, also with a gauged lintel and ogee soffit, along with a plat band. The gable return displays flint-chalk chequerwork on flint footings, with a later rear lean-to.
The central block has three sliding sash windows, two of which are flush dormers, along with a 20th-century window. The northern bay, built in 1897, is two storeys high, with the date marked in brick headers within the flintwork. It has a double roll pantiled roof, a 20th-century door, sliding sash windows, and a small gable over the dormer.
Inside, the two central bays represent a timber-framed house with a smoke bay at the southern end, which was floored around 1580-1620, with a brick external stack added later, incorporated into the early to mid-18th-century extension. The roof features principals reduced over clasped purlins. A photograph of wall paintings was visible in 1982, as noted by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments.
