Description

The Old Rectory is a house dating from the late 17th century and 1742. The main block is constructed of brick with limestone quoins and dressings, topped with a slate roof. At the rear, there is an earlier block made of flint and limestone, featuring plain tiled roofs. This rear block has two bays and is connected to the front block, which includes a central stair hall and flanking reception rooms, with an extension to the left made in the early 19th century.

The facade consists of seven by two window bays, divided into three equal sections by two giant order pilasters, each supporting a triglyph frieze. The windows are twelve-pane sashes with segmental brick arches and stone keys. The central first-floor window is blind, with an incised key reading "F.J.M. 1742," possibly referring to Robert Merchant, who was rector from 1731 to 1773 and also the President of Magdalen College, Oxford. This central window is flanked by narrow eight-pane sashes. The entrance features a central open pedimented six-panel door set on console brackets. A timber cornice runs along the top, slightly projecting over the pilasters. The roof is hipped and includes stacks at the rear, along with three flat-roofed dormers that have casement windows.

Inside, there is a dog-leg stair with dado panelling, likely from the mid-19th century. The room to the left is fully panelled in the 18th century, featuring a cornice and a 19th-century fireplace. The drawing room in the left two-bay extension was also added between 1842 and 1854 for Reverend T. Phillips.
