Description

Greystone House is a Grade II* listed building constructed between 1740 and 1744. It stands three storeys high and features an elaborate front made of Bath stone on a brick structure, topped with a hipped slate roof. The building has a projecting terraced plinth with moulded coping, approximately 2 feet 6 inches high.

The facade includes a slightly projecting central section with full-height angle piers, supporting a bold moulded and dentilled stone cornice. Above this, there is a segmental pediment and a tall parapet with moulded coping. The entrance features a tall eight-panel door set within a stone surround, flanked by three-quarter Doric columns and an entablature adorned with triglyph and rosette decorations on the frieze, along with a modillion cornice that has rosettes between the modillions.

At the first floor, above the door, there is a central niche within a rectangular panel, surrounded by three-quarter Ionic columns and an entablature with a curved frieze, bracketed cornice, and pediment. The second floor has a central window, while each floor's central motif is flanked by narrow arched windows with side pilasters and a banded arch featuring a keystone. The side bays contain one window each, with the ground floor windows altered to plain 19th-century angular bays. All glazing bars have been changed.

An original cast lead rainwater head is located on the left-hand return side. The interior boasts contemporary panelling, fine plasterwork, and a staircase. Greystone House is prominently situated at the junction of High Street and Long Street and forms a group with the Elm Tree Inn and Nos 2 and 3 Long Street.
