Description
This is a cattle yard and buildings located approximately 80 meters northeast of Alston Farmhouse, dating from the mid to late 19th century. The structures are built of stone rubble and feature a hipped slated roof. The rectangular yard is enclosed by a wall on the front and left sides, with cattle sheds situated at the rear and left sides.
There is an entrance at the front next to the right-hand building, with a corresponding entrance at the rear between the two buildings. The buildings are single-storeyed, with the rear building including a loft. The rear building has three doorways with slightly curved arches made of stone voussoirs, and it features plank doors with strap-hinges. There are also two small windows with flat stone lintels and one plank door leading to the loft.
The right-hand building has three doorways with round and segmental arches made of red brick. The enclosing walls are made of stone rubble and include rounded gate piers, all topped with alternating short and tall coping stones. The rear gate has a rounded pier of the same type on the right side. Together with Alston Farmhouse and its main yard, this cattle yard forms a cohesive farmyard group.
