Description
The lodges, gates, flanking walls, and railings at the north entrance to Gramercy Hall School were built around 1843 by George Wightwick. They were later doubled in depth between 1983 and 1985 by Keith Proctor. The lodges feature solid walls with a rendered finish, and their roofs are not visible from the road, appearing flat. Each lodge has a panelled, tapered chimneypot on a low pedestal, located on the front and back pediments. The lodges are single-storey structures designed with Doric porticos, featuring paired pilasters at each end that support an entablature with a triangular pediment. The central window tapers towards the top and has an eared architrave with 6-paned sashes. The side walls facing the entrance have three pilasters in the center and two at each end, with two tapered doorways that have eared architraves and 6-paned half-glazed doors on each side. The top entablature includes a blocking course, and the rear walls are designed to match the fronts.
In front of the lodges, there is a pair of iron gates with spearhead uprights, which hang from square openwork iron piers topped with rounded caps, decorated with flowers, foliage, and pine cones. The railings match the gates and extend outwards to the road in ogee curves. At each end, there is a panelled pier with a moulded cap. Beyond the railings, there is an ogee-shaped stretch of limestone ashlar walling that ends in a square pier. The wall on the right features flat stone coping and a low pyramidal cap on the pier, while these elements are missing on the left-hand side.
