Description

The courtyard of farm buildings, located immediately north-east of Alston Farmhouse, is likely from the early 19th century, with alterations in the mid-to-late 19th century. It is now used as offices, a garage, and for storage. The buildings are constructed of stone rubble with occasional red brick detailing. The roofs are mainly corrugated asbestos, with some slate sections. The courtyard is enclosed on four sides, with part of the farmhouse’s side wall forming the south-west boundary. Two low ranges of buildings front the road, with a gateway situated between them. The right-hand range features a barn at the front, with lofted shippons (animal shelters) and stables located behind it and in the rear range. A short range, situated to the left and behind the house, has a stone staircase leading up to an upper storey. The entrance is marked by rounded gate piers. The animal houses have doorways and windows with segmental arches constructed of voussoirs. A cobble pavement runs alongside the exterior of these buildings.
