Description
This is a former blacksmith's house, now a private residence, dated 1870. It is located on Brixham Road, Churston Ferrers. The front and side walls are constructed from squared Devonian limestone, featuring large dressed quoins, door, and window arches. The roof is slate, with red crested ridge tiles. There are brick chimneys on each end wall, with projecting top courses forming caps and two round pots on each. The building follows a double-fronted, double-depth plan. To the left is the site of the former stable, forge, and cart-house, which are separately listed as Ye Old Forge. The house has two storeys and is two windows wide, with a gabled centre projection housing the doorway. The openings have segmental arches with raised keystones. The front door is planked with strap hinges, and the windows are six-paned sashes. Above the centre gable, which has plain bargeboards, is a stone plaque bearing the letter "C" within a coronet, along with the date 1870, commemorating Lord Churston. A low stone rubble front garden wall has flat stone coping and supports a low iron railing with widely-spaced uprights, each topped with a moulded finial. Two stone ashlar gate piers support an iron gate with spearhead uprights, alternating in height.
