Description

Ye Old Forge is a former forge, stable, and cart shed that has been converted into a house. It was likely built around 1870, the same time as The Old Smithy nearby. The structure is made of stone rubble with red-brick window surrounds on the rear wall and has slated roofs with two small red-brick chimneys. The buildings are arranged on the left side of a yard, with the former smith's house, The Old Smithy, located on the right. The former stable, which faces the road, is at the front, with the forge situated behind it. Further back, slightly to the right, is the former cart-house, which has a small room at the rear. A small entrance porch, built in the late 20th century, connects the forge and the cart-house.

Originally, the buildings were single-storeyed with a loft above the room behind the cart-house, but they have since been altered to two storeys, except for the stable. The front openings feature flat or slightly curved arches with well-cut voussoirs and small-paned late 20th-century wood casements. The stable has a wide doorway on the right and a window on the left. The forge includes a long former louvre with a pitched roof at its ridge, while the cart-house has a wide doorway in the gable-end with double doors that have strap-hinges.

Inside, the ground floor features the original plank door between the stable and the forge, which has strap-hinges and opens in two halves. Various initials and carvings are visible on the planks, and the door is framed with chamfered wood. The forge still retains the stone rubble base of the original smith's forge, and the leather bellows remain in place behind it.
