Description
Margaret Clitherow House is an orphanage that was later used as a priory, built in 1865 to the designs of Joseph Hansom. The building is constructed from local grey rock-faced limestone, laid to course, with ashlar quoins and freestone dressings. It features gabled slate roofs and stacks with ashlar stone shafts and brattished cornices.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a basement, with a long entrance front that has nine windows and six coped gables. There is a moulded string at the first-floor level. To the left, a moulded arched doorway has a hoodmould and a recessed two-leaf plank front door with elaborate strap hinges. The stone mullioned windows have chamfered mullions, with transomed windows on the ground floor, some featuring trefoil-headed or lancet lights above the transom. The first-floor windows are square-headed, and some second-floor windows have trefoil-headed lights. The sixth bay from the left includes a two-storey canted bay with a hipped stone roof. Additionally, there is a square bay with a stone roof at the left-hand ground-floor corner, facing towards the church. The interior has not been inspected but may retain features of interest.
