Description
The Parish Church of St Mary is located in St Marychurch, Torquay. The tower, designed by J Hugall, dates from 1877, while the rest of the church was largely rebuilt between 1952 and 1956 in a traditional Gothic style following significant damage during the war. The church is constructed from local grey limestone rubble with yellow sandstone dressings and has a natural slate roof.
The layout includes a nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and a west tower. The west tower is three stages high and features angle buttresses, along with a two-stage southeast stair turret that has a niche for a statue. The west face of the tower boasts a four-light window with curvilinear tracery and shafts that have carved capitals. The second stage contains two trefoil-headed one-light windows. The belfry has two two-light Decorated style traceried windows with louvres and richly-moulded architraves, topped by a pierced parapet and octagonal corner pinnacles. The 1950s rebuild reflects a conventional Gothic style, with a buttressed south aisle and traceried windows.
The interior was not inspected during the survey, but Pevsner mentions a notable 12th-century font with figure scenes, a pre-war rood screen, and post-war fittings designed by Herbert Read of Exeter.
