Description

Cary Castle is a large villa dating to the late 1840s and early 1850s, with later 20th-century additions. Originally used as holiday flats, it stands on Church Road, St Marychurch, Torquay. The building is constructed of plastered material, with a concealed roof behind parapets. Chimney stacks have rendered shafts topped with embattled, corbelled caps, some of which are octagonal. The architectural style is Picturesque Gothic.

The plan is double-depth, featuring a north-facing original block and east-facing service wings that have been developed and extended. The exterior comprises two storeys and includes a four-stage entrance tower with embattled parapets, angle buttresses with battered set-offs and gabled finials. Windows are high-transomed, moulded, and mullioned casements; those on the front elevation have hoodmoulds with carved label stops. The three-bay entrance front has a projecting tower, buttressed on the lower two stages and with pilaster strips above. The doorway is Tudor-arched and contains a Gothick panelled door with a fanlight. The upper stages of the tower are decorated with blind traceried friezes between the pilaster strips, topped with corbelled pinnacles. A shallow projecting stack with an embattled cap is visible to the right. The front elevation has two windows to the left and three to the tower. The remaining original elevations continue in a similar style and feature two- and three-light windows and embattled parapets, some rising centrally.

The interior, though not inspected in detail, retains original plasterwork, joinery, and a staircase.
