Description
Tollgate House, formerly known as Monksbridge Cottage, is a former toll house located on Monksbridge Road in Brixham. It was likely built around 1838. The building features solid rendered walls on the north side, while the south side has painted slate hanging. It has a hipped slated roof and two rendered chimneys with later painted brick tops. The structure consists of two linked blocks: one block has canted bays at each end facing New Road and Monksbridge Road, and the other block is positioned at right angles, facing the junction of the two roads, with broadly splayed corners. The house is two storeys tall and has irregular fenestration with late 20th-century small-paned casements. There is a late 20th-century studded plank door facing the road junction, which is set in a small porch with a moulded top and a lean-to roof.
