Description

Horsford is a villa built around the 1850s, featuring a plastered exterior and a slate roof with rendered chimney stacks that have cornices. The building has a double-depth rectangular plan, with a south-facing garden front and a west entrance front. It stands three storeys tall, with the south garden elevation consisting of three wide bays. The central bay projects forward and includes triple grouped sash windows framed by linked architrave surrounds. There are blind boxes above the windows and aprons below the sills, which are set against a string course. On the ground floor, the windows extend down to the plinth and are topped with a common modillion cornice supported by four fluted console brackets, adorned with head ornaments. The recessed one-window bays feature architrave surrounds for the sashes, which have Venetian shutters, and are complemented by similar panelled quoins and cornices on the ground floor. The west entrance front has two windows and an external chimney, also with Venetian shutters, and features a central enclosed porch. The porch has a moulded archway with a keystone and a string at the impost level, along with an entablature that includes a bracket cornice and a blocking course. Inside, the villa retains its original features, including an open string staircase with slender turned balusters and a continuous mahogany rail. Historically, the building was shown as "the Pines" on the 1866 Ordnance Survey map.
