Description

The Devonshire Hotel is a large villa dating from the 1840s, currently functioning as a hotel. It features extensive 20th-century additions at the rear that are not included in the listing. The building is plastered with a hipped slate roof and has stacks with rendered shafts and corbelled cornices, showcasing an Italianate style.

The plan is approximately rectangular with a projecting central entrance bay. The exterior has two storeys, with a three-storey entrance bay. It features deep eaves supported by elaborate moulded eaves brackets and a first-floor platband. The front is asymmetrical with five windows. A modern front door is recessed between window bays and is flanked by pilasters. A Doric porch with columns in antis has been removed since the 1975 listing description and replaced with an unsuitable 20th-century canopy on iron columns.

The first and second-floor windows above the door are four-pane sashes with horizontal glazing bars. The ground-floor sashes include one tripartite window with plain architraves featuring incised Greek key moulding and cornices on brackets. The first-floor window sashes are set in plainer embrasures, with one window having a balustraded parapet. There is a front lateral stack to the right of centre with pedimented shoulders. The interior has been partially inspected and includes a staircase with a good cast-iron balustrade.
