Description

The gate piers and walls at the entrance to Merida were built around the 1830s and are contemporary with the villa itself, which is an unusually early example close to the center of Torquay. The structure features plastered and rusticated surfaces. The plan includes short sections of wall that curve inward towards square section gate piers. The left-hand section of the wall ramps down to the gate pier, while the right-hand section ramps up. The rusticated gate piers are adorned with moulded brackets beneath corbelled moulded caps. This structure is listed for its group value with Merida.
