Description

The School associated with the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady is a building dating from 1857, designed by J Hansom. It is constructed from local grey limestone rubble with freestone dressings and has a slate roof, featuring stacks with stone shafts, some of which are old octagonal shafts. The school is part of a group that includes a church and a presbytery, and it has a T-plan layout.

The exterior consists of a two-storey block at the northeast with a schoolroom at the southwest end. The two-storey block has a three-window arrangement on the northeast end, with a small gable at the front right and a hipped roof porch accessed from the right side through a shouldered doorway. The porch includes shouldered windows with stone architraves. To the left of the porch, there is a paired shouldered window, and above the porch, a small first-floor two-light window. Under the gable, a tall window has been converted into a glazed door in the 20th century. The left side of the two-storey block features paired and triple-shouldered windows. The schoolroom on the left has a four-window front with triple shouldered windows. To the right, there is a two-storey porch block with a shouldered doorway flanked by one-light windows and a pair of chamfered lancets above. The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features.
