Description
No. 6 Fore Street is a large house that has been converted into shops. It dates from the early 19th century and may be a remodelling of an earlier building. The front is solidly rendered, while the top of the left side wall is made of stone rubble with a red-brick gable. The roof is slated, with the rear slope appearing to be more steeply pitched than the front. The building is double-fronted and double-depth, featuring a staircase at the rear center. It has three storeys with a garret and three widely spaced windows across the front.
The ground storey includes a wide central doorway with a bead-moulded surround, flanked by pilaster strips and topped with a moulded cornice on consoles. The upper-storey windows are sash windows with horns, while the third-storey windows are two-paned sashes. The second-storey windows have moulded cornices on consoles. Raised quoins are present on all three storeys, and there is a deep flat eaves-cornice with mouldings at the rear of one soffit. A small hipped dormer is located in the center of the roof, featuring a two-light wood casement, and there is a matching dormer with a pent-roof on the rear roof slope.
The interior has not been inspected, but it appears to retain its original staircase with a boarded-in balustrade. The house is situated in an important location near the junction with Bolton Street and New Road.
