Description
Darley Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century or possibly earlier. It is constructed of plastered cob with a thatched roof, half-hipped at the ends. The house includes an axial stack with a rendered shaft on the external rear right corner, and an external rear right corner stack. The plan is of a 2-room-and-cross-passage design.
The exterior presents as a single-storey building with an attic, featuring a 2-window range. A fine chamfered shouldered doorframe is visible in the passage, with a plank and cover strip front door. The thatch is carried down as a catslide over a possible oven projection to the left. There are two ground-floor 3-light casements, fitted with 20th-century diamond-leaded panes. An eyebrowed thatch covers a 2-light dormer in the centre, which is similarly glazed.
Inside, exposed beams are visible in the cross passage. The remainder of the house was not inspected. The roof is reportedly inaccessible. Darley Cottage is considered one of the most externally complete vernacular houses in Torquay.
