Description

This is a barn and adjoining outbuilding located south-west of Shiphay Manor, dating from the late 15th to 16th century for the barn and probably 19th century for the outbuilding. The barn is constructed of local grey limestone rubble with red sandstone dressings, while the outbuilding features a corrugated-iron roof.

The barn is aligned on a west-east axis and likely originally had seven bays, indicated by eight slots for loft crossbeams, with a small doorway on the north side. The south doorway is in ruins but may have been larger in the past. There is a loft loading door at the west end. The exterior of the roofless barn includes a centrally located segmental-headed chamfered doorway on the north side and three ventilation slits, with two additional ventilation slits on the south wall, all of which are deeply splayed. The segmental-headed chamfered loft loading door is situated at the west end, and the south doorway shows signs of infill with splayed sides, which has reduced the opening.

Inside, the barn features crossbeam slots with stone pads projecting from them and a chamfered stone wall plate. A 19th or early 20th century drive shaft with two wheels is mounted on cast-iron brackets on the east end wall. The remains of the original roof are stored in the adjoining outbuilding. The barn's trusses have short curved feet with tenons for pegging into a timber wall plate, along with mortised collars and threaded purlins. Several principal rafters and common rafters are still present. The outbuilding contains four pegged A-frame trusses that have been heavily repaired and supplemented with later timbers. The A-frames feature butt collars, but the original purlins, rafters, and ridge are missing.
