Description

Torre Railway Station, built in 1848 for Brunel's South Devon Railway and enlarged in 1882, is a single-storey station designed in the Italianate style. The building features a timber frame clad with horizontal boarding that mimics banded rustication, topped with a low-pitched hipped slate roof.

The station includes waiting rooms and offices, with canopies over both the forecourt and the platform. The forecourt elevation is symmetrical, with a 1:3:1-bay front where the end bays project slightly. The eaves extend as a canopy supported by large curved timber brackets with pendants. The outer bays have Gibbs windows with pilaster frames and keyblocks, glazed with plate-glass sashes. The central bay features a simpler triple window with round-headed lights, flanked by two-leaf panelled doors, each with pilaster frames and an overlight above a cornice on brackets. The entrance is located at the extreme left, with three matching bays set back on either side.

On the platform side, there is a deep 12-bay matchboarded canopy with a fretted fascia on cast-iron brackets, and the spandrels display stylized foliage. The columns are concealed by concrete block infill. Steps lead to a bridge with fluted columns and decorated spandrels. The bridge is supported at its higher end by groups of four columns featuring Egyptian decoration, with iron lattice balustrades, a lead hipped canopy, and timber finials.

The station opened on 18 December 1848, and the first train, adorned with evergreens and flags, completed the 6-mile journey between Newton and Torre in just 13 minutes.
