Description

The Lechlade Halfpenny Bridge Tollhouse is a road bridge built in 1792 that carries Thames Street (A361) over the River Thames. Constructed of dressed stone, the bridge is approximately 6 meters wide and features a coped wall about 1 meter high that follows the considerable arch of the bridge, splaying out at each corner. The roadway from the toll house to the center district boundary line measures about 10 meters. The bridge has a single large semi-circular arch that reaches about 8 meters high at its apex, with a straight large roll moulded string course above it. Each side pier includes a blind round oculus and very small semi-circular arches at the base.

The toll house is located on the northeast corner of the bridge. It is a small square structure with two stories and a basement, built from coursed stone, topped with an asbestos slate pyramidal roof and a brick stack on the east side. A large roll moulded string course separates the floors. The toll house features square window openings on the south and north sides, and a door on the west side that opens directly onto the bridge. The bridge and tollhouse are said to be named after the halfpenny toll that was charged until 1839.
