Description
The former hat factory located to the rear of number 191 was built between 1818 and 1823. It is a disused factory constructed from random rubble with pantiles and stone slates at the eaves, featuring end stacks, one of which has a cornice. The building has three storeys and seven windows, with small single lights that have wooden lintels on the first and second floors. The ground floor includes a central segmental-headed door flanked by two similar windows, with one plain light beyond. The rear elevation is identical except for various later openings on the ground floor. The plain end elevation has a large square opening under a relieving arch on the ground floor. This factory was built for Christies the hatters in response to labor troubles in London and Stockport. It is an important early example and now an almost unique survival of a non-woollen mill in a rural setting in this area. The building represents the legacy of the Industrial Revolution in Frampton Cotterell, which has been a center of felt hatting since the early 17th century due to its location on the damp side of the Cotswolds.
