Description
The Frampton Cotterell War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1922. It is carved from Portland stone and is located in the churchyard of St Peter's Church, which is a Grade II* listed building.
The memorial features a Celtic cross atop a tapering shaft adorned with runic carvings, including a dove, a tree, and a whale, symbolizing air, land, and sea, respectively. It is set on a tall rectangular plinth that has a chamfered collar inscribed with the words: "TO THE/ GLORY/ OF GOD." Below this collar, there is an inscription in black painted lettering that reads: "A THANK OFFERING/ FOR PEACE/ AND IN/ HONOURED MEMORY/ OF/ THOSE FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918 / (Names)/ RIP." The right side of the plinth is inscribed with the years "1939-1945 / (Names)."
Additionally, the memorial is situated within a small remembrance garden that is enclosed by low stone rubble walls, although this garden is not included in the listing.
