Description
The Stoke Gifford war memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of stone and has a square plan.
The memorial faces north-west and is situated on a small paved area within a triangular piece of land known as The Green. It resembles a small cenotaph, featuring a base and plinth that are both single stepped, along with a chamfered pedestal that supports a short shaft with a canted top section. On the north-west face of the shaft, there is a moulded rectangular panel inscribed with the words: ‘ERECTED / BY THE PARISHIONERS OF / STOKE GIFFORD TO THE / EVERLASTING MEMORY OF / THE FOLLOWING BRAVE / MEN WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914-1919’ followed by names. The top stage is decorated with a relief of a laurel wreath that encloses the letters ‘RIP’ carved in relief at the center. The dedication for the Second World War on the south-east face reads: ‘TO / THE MEMORY OF THOSE BRAVE MEN / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / 1939-1945’ followed by names.
The rectangular paved area where the memorial stands retains seven contemporary fence posts that once supported chains of a low chain link fence, which is now missing.
