Description
St. Michael's School is a school building dated 1863, constructed from rubble brought to courses, with quoins, freestone dressings, and stacks, topped with a slate and concrete tile roof. The structure consists of a main block and a south cross wing, rising to 1 and 1½ storeys and featuring six windows. The gabled main block has five tall transmullioned windows and one large 9-light window in the end gable beneath the datestone. It also has a central, large ornate stack. The gabled cross wing features a 3-light transmullioned window with diamond lattice casements, along with a similar 2-light window above, both set under relieving arches. Above these windows are the Beaufort arms, ornate bargeboards, and a finial. To the right, there is a lean-to porch with an elliptical opening, supported by a chamfered shaft. The end gable and the single-storey rear wing also have similar diamond lattice windows. This building is part of a significant development by the Beaufort estate, designed in the picturesque tradition.
