Description
Wallscourt Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in 1855 by George Godwin, who was the editor of "The Builder," for the Duke of Beaufort. The building features rubble construction with freestone dressings and slate roofs, creating a picturesque appearance with its gables and chimneys. The main elevation includes two gables that rise to 2½ storeys, alongside a 3½ storey tower. Most of the windows are designed as 3-light transom and mullion types. The left gable has an oriel window above, while the right gable features a canted bay below and the Beaufort arms above. Below the tower is a gabled and glazed porch, which leads to a pyramidal roof with dormers topped by decorative crestings. Similar gables and windows, some with drips, can be found on the other elevations. The building is topped with an elaborate arrangement of octagonal chimney stacks. Inside, the farmhouse retains contemporary plaster ceiling decorations, a well-crafted staircase with carved finials and pendants, pierced balusters, and a cusped niche on the landing. The doors are notably braced in an X and Y pattern, and all doors and shutters are reinforced with metal bands as a precaution against potential social unrest.
