Description
The screen walls and piers to Sands Gate, also known as Duchess Gate, are located on Park Road in Stapleton, Bristol. They were built in 1762 by Thomas Wright and constructed by Thomas Paty. The structure features limestone ashlar, squared Lias rubble, and Pennant ashlar and rubble.
The entrance includes a pair of moulded, panelled piers topped with moulded caps and iron lamp baskets. There are side pedestrian gates flanked by smaller piers that have vermiculated panels and caps. The screen walls have flat copings and contain niches on each side with elegant Pennant arches and shallow pilasters. The outer walls are made of Pennant rubble, with the left-hand wall ending in a gate topped with a pyramidal cap.
Historically, Sands Gate served as the southern carriage entrance to Stoke Park, and the original gates were removed to Badminton, having been made in a forge located approximately 100 meters to the south on Broom Hill.
