Description
Wickham Court is a house dating from the early 17th century, constructed from pennant rubble and topped with a double Roman tiled roof. It features a double-depth plan with a left-hand cross-wing and stands two storeys high, with an attic and basement. The building has a four-window range and a central gable flanked by two-storey blocks. To the right of the gable are two doors; the right-hand door has a large stone lintel and a six-panel door that is glazed at the top and fielded in the middle, while a 20th-century glazed door is located to the left. Stone boot scrapers are also present. The windows include leaded metal casements with interlacing at the top and some green glass, set within two- and three-light ovolo-moulded mullion and transom windows on the gable, first floor, and attic. The ground floor features plain cross windows with glazing bars, particularly on the right side.
Inside, there is a central rear dogleg winder stair with splat balusters and vase newels with pendants, leading to an observation platform at the top of the rear stair tower. Additional interior features include scrolled window catches, angled stanchion bars, deeply chamfered beams with chamfer stops, and studded doors with nine panels.
An attached rubble garden wall extends approximately 100 meters to the southwest, following the line of the former Gloucester Road up from Wickham Bridge. Historically, Cromwell and Fairfax are believed to have held council here before their march on Bristol in August 1645. Wickham Court is noted for its important architectural features and well-preserved interior.
