Description
The Galleon is a farmhouse that has been converted into a club. It dates from the late 17th century and late 18th century. The building features random rubble construction, with some parts rendered, and has a pantile roof. It is a double-depth house made up of two parallel ranges, with the rear section from the 17th century and the front from the 18th century. The main elevation, which is late 18th century, has been rendered and re-roofed in recent years.
The façade has a central entrance with a modern door and a gabled porch, flanked by two modern 2-light casement windows with segmental heads. Above this, there are three modern 3-light casement windows, also with segmental heads. Each gable has a garret window, and there is a ridge stack on the right gable. To the left, there is an additional set-back bay with a similar 3-light casement window above and a gable stack.
The rear range, dating from around 1700, is built of roughly coursed rubble and has an old pantile roof, with old pantiles also on the rear slope of the front range. The ground floor is obscured by later extensions, but the upper floor retains original openings under timber lintels, and there is a garret window in the gable along with a gable stack on the right. Historical research indicates that this house may have been known as Lower House or Lower House Farm, with relevant tenancy changes recorded in 1715 and 1792, which correspond to the two periods of construction. The interior was not accessible during the inspection.
