Description
The front boundary wall to the Cottage Hospital and Institute, built in 1891 by C.E. Ponting, is a Grade II listed structure. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings, measuring about one metre high and 80 metres long. The wall features central double return steps with ball finials on either side, and a stone shell fountain with voussoirs and a trough below. Along the length of the wall, there are brick piers topped with scrolled stone capitals, all finished with stone coping. At the right end, there is a large banded brick and stone pier, while at the left, large brick piers for carriage entry are adorned with a stone plinth featuring acanthus and fruit, topped with an urn-shaped finial. The wall is ramped along its length to follow the slope of Gloucester Road.
