Description
The boundary wall on the west and south sides of the grounds of Bushell's Hospital dates from the 18th century and was likely extended in the 19th century. It is constructed from squared sandstone with dressed coping and features ashlar piers and cast iron gates. The wall is approximately one metre high and has chamfered coping with remnants of former iron railings.
In alignment with the front door of Bushell's Hospital, there are square gate piers made of rusticated ashlar, each about 3 metres high, topped with moulded caps that hold urns. At each end of the 9-bay facade of the original house, there are similar but smaller piers with moulded pyramidal tops instead of urns. The corner and side gates have piers that match these. The entrance features ramped double gates at the front and corner, along with a single gate on the west side, all adorned with spear-headed railings.
