Range Of Garden Walls And Piers And Steps About 5 Metres East Of Hamswell House

This is a range of garden walls, piers, and steps dating from the 18th century, located about 5 metres east of Hamswell House. The walls define the layout of the formal gardens and are constructed from limestone rubble, freestone, and ashlar.

The ashlar wall features a coping along the terrace and includes central steps made of freestone, which have wreathed ends at the walls and coping. The walls slope down to the north and south and have segmental-headed openings with a keystone and cornice, while the outer sides feature square-headed openings. Below the terrace level, the walls are made of rubble and have coping, with ashlar pilasters at intervals, reaching about 3 metres in height.

To the east, there are two semi-circular ashlar recesses with a cornice, each containing a rectangular unglazed window opening. Adjacent to these are steps leading to a lower terrace, each flanked by a pair of square piers that have raised panels and flat tops with a moulded edge at both the top and bottom. The piers and steps to the north are skewed, with a moulded top string on the steps.
