Description

This is a barn located about 130 metres southeast of Codrington Court, dating from the 17th century, with possibly earlier origins and later alterations. It is constructed of rubble with stone dressings and features a plain tiled roof, which has courses of stone slates at the eaves. The barn has a rectangular plan.

The west elevation includes a cart entry with double heavy timber lintels and quoins on either side, as well as a small door with a plain frame and timber lintel. The south elevation features a block loading door in the gable end and a lean-to made of corrugated asbestos. On the east elevation, there is a cart entry to the left with a heavy timber lintel, a loading door, and a lower cart entry with a timber lintel and quoins on the left side only. A wider wing to the north has a diagonal buttress, large quoins, and a weathered string course. The only remaining wall of this wider wing has mortices in the stonework and a timber lintel over a blocked cart entry in the northwest wall.

Inside, there is a rubble dividing wall between the north and south sections. The north section has a three-bay roof with principal rafters, a ridge purlin, a plated yoke, tie-beams, and collars, with part of the purlin remaining in the north bay below the tie-beam and three windbraces still visible. The south section also has three bays of similar construction, with one complete pair of windbraces remaining on the east slope and one single windbrace beside it, along with keeping holes to the north, south, and west. There is a south window in a deep splayed reveal. The barn was noted to be in poor condition at the time of the survey in September 1984.
