Description

Barleyclose Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse that was enlarged in the early 18th century, with later alterations and additions. The farmhouse is built of rubble with stone dressings and brick, and has a 2-span slate roof with raised coped verges and kneelers. It has gable stacks and double Roman tiled roofs to the side additions. The original passage runs through the centre of the house, dividing the front and rear blocks, and the front of the house now faces south (rear).

The south elevation has three storeys and three windows. The ground floor has two 16-pane sashes in plain surrounds. A central porch with a hipped roof contains a 4-panelled door with glass. The first floor has two 3-light casements with chamfered mullions and surrounds, and a central 20th-century 2-light casement with a chamfered surround. The second floor has three single-light casements in a chamfered surround, also 20th century. Quoins are visible. There are two-storey blocks attached to either side; the right-hand block has a wide timber lintel and a small wooden-framed window with shutters, with brickwork visible below, and the left-hand block has a 3-light casement with chamfered wooden mullions, unglazed, also with brickwork below. The left return has a 2-light casement with a wooden frame and mullion at the upper level of the addition, and two small 20th-century attic windows. Stepped stonework is visible under the verges. A single-storey lean-to roof covers the yard. The farmhouse has 3 plank and batten doors with strap hinges; two have timber lintels, and the central door has a segmental stone head. The right return has a 2-light casement at first floor left, a 6-pane sash with a timber lintel at ground floor right, and an addition to the left featuring a garage door with an upper loading door, as well as a single-storey addition to the right. The rear elevation has two 3-light casements with hollow-chamfered mullions, a central door replaced by a 20th-century window, and three 2-light casements on the first floor, all with a hood mould and relieving arch, except for the three 2-light casements under the eaves. An addition to the right has a 19th-century door in a chamfered frame.

The interior features chamfered and stopped spine beams with run-out stops. A former dairy is located at the rear, with a trapdoor leading to a cheese room above. First-floor rear windows have loop catches, iron stanchions, hollow-chamfered mullions, and splayed reveals. The 3-bay front roof has a tie-beam, collar, one row of purlins, a plated yoke, and a ridge purlin.
