Description
This is a farmhouse, now a house, originally dating to the 15th century. It was initially the infirmarium of St. Augustine's Abbey, Bristol, and has undergone alterations, with restoration work circa 1930 and the addition of a two-and-a-half storey cross wing to the north. The farmhouse is constructed of rubble with stone dressings and quoins, topped with a Cotswold stone tiled roof and ridge stacks, with a weathered external gable stack to the south. It has a T-plan layout.
The south elevation has two storeys and four by one windows. To the left, all windows have pointed arched chamfered surrounds; the ground floor has two three-light and two single-light windows, while the first floor has two two-light and two single-light windows. A pointed arched door is located to the right on the ground floor. The two-and-a-half storey wing to the right has a ground-floor four-light, a first-floor three-light, and a second-floor two-light casement window. These windows have ovolo mullions, hood moulds, and leaded lights, with a king mullion at ground floor level. The south elevation of the wing has two windows corresponding to the front elevation, with single and three-light windows at ground floor and single and two-light windows at first floor. The south elevation of the main block has a ground-floor single-light window similar to the front, to the left of the external stack, with small single-light windows at attic level on either side of the stack. The west elevation features varied windows and includes a three-light window with pierced spandrels. A narrow, three-storey gabled block is located to the left with an oval bull's eye window in a chamfered surround at ground floor level and single-light windows with bolection-moulded surrounds at first and second floors. The west elevation of the wing mirrors the front elevation, with three ground-floor windows and one first- and second-floor window.
The rear elevation has a one-storey addition with a pitched roof to the right and a single-storey flat-roofed addition attached. A door has a depressed four-centred arched head set in a heavy frame, alongside two small windows in wooden frames. Two three-light casements are located at ground floor, with chamfered timber mullions and lintels on the ground floor. The first floor has three varied casements similar to those on the ground floor. Dormer gables feature stone-slated aprons and cheeks, each with a two-light casement.
The interior includes four-centred arched doors, deep chamfered beams, deep window reveals, a Tudor arched fireplace, and a wide newel staircase at the rear of the entrance hall, with solid treads and continuous newel.
