Description
The Wapley War Memorial is a granite structure created by the sculptor J Dawson and was erected in the early 1920s in the churchyard of St Peter's Church in Wapley. It commemorates the men of the parish who lost their lives serving in the First World War.
The memorial stands approximately 3.5 meters tall and features a Latin cross on a tapering shaft, which is set on a three-tiered rectangular base that rests on a rectangular low plinth. The front of the base is polished and bears an inscription in leaded lettering that reads:
ERECTED TO THE MEMORY / OF THE FALLEN / OF THIS PARISH / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919 / (Names)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS.
Additionally, there is a small marble plaque in the left-hand corner of the plinth, also with leaded lettering, which states:
J. DAWSON / SCULPTOR / DOWNEND.
