Description

Mouswell Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 17th century, featuring alterations and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of rubble rendered with a double Roman tiled roof that has raised coped verges on the rear gable and gable stacks. The building is L-shaped, with a through passage, and consists of three storeys and two windows. The front has a gable end to the left, with a gable that rises nearly to the ridge. All windows are 19th century, including 2- and 3-light casements, and there is a 2-light fixed light in the gable. The gabled porch has a plank door with a glass insertion and an inner plank and batten door with decorative strap hinges. To the right, there is a 1½ storey wing with a 2-light casement and battered walls.

The left return features two 19th century cross windows at the ground floor and a 3-light casement, while the first floor has two 3-light casements and an attic window with ventilation louvres. The right return has a 2-light casement at both the ground and first floors. The rear includes a single storey lean-to with a plank door and a 3-light casement with ovolo mullions and surround, a 19th century 3-light casement at the first floor, and a 2-light casement at the second floor. The rear wing has a 19th century addition with a segmental-headed arch, two inner doors with glass insertions, a 2-light casement at the first floor, and an attic window with two lights.

Inside, there are chamfered and stopped beams, and the ground floor front room contains an 18th century cupboard with shaped shelves. The east wing has a 3-bay roof, while the west wing has a 4-bay roof with two very heavy collars, each supported by two rows of purlins. There is a former window in the wall between the two roofs. At the time of the survey in September 1984, the building was in poor condition and had been badly affected by dry rot.
